Region 5 Conference: Registration Still Open

The Region 5 Conference, sponsored by LSC this year, is coming to Addison
on November 2 – 4. In homage to the Lone Star Community’s 50th
anniversary, the conference theme is the 50 Facets of Technical
Communication. Sessions are organized into four broad tracks: Usable
Tools, Standards of Practice, Global Perspectives, and Learning and
Leading. With almost 30 sessions, including four half-day workshops on
Saturday afternoon, you will find multiple sessions to interest you.

This year's Region 5 conference has an exciting program, including the
keynote speakers. John Pruitt has agreed to be the opening keynote speaker
and the closing keynote speaker will be Paula LaRocque.

One of the half-day workshops, Public Relations: Getting to the Media and
Writing the Release will be given by local Fox news reporter Jeff Crilley
and LSC's own Elisa Miller. The cost for the half-day workshops is $75,
and requires a separate registration from the conference.

Conference Regular Registration

• Non-members $200.00
• Students $125.00

November 2: Community Service for NOLA Art Students

The folks at Le Rabouin Career Magnet School in New Orleans are doing
their best. When you have to do things like fix windows and make a place
safe for the kids, anything beyond the basics is low on the list. Art
Teacher Shanna D'Antonio has reached out
 are we ready to answer?

They have no art supplies at all this year and what little they do have is
coming from their own pockets. This is especially hard when there are so
many other things to spend money on. The ability to be creative keeps us
sane and allows us to do our work with confidence and care.

Let's see if we can't come up with a few things to help these kids. The
list is very simple stuff:

• paper towels
• acrylic or matte boards
• paintbrushes and colored pencils
• paper... lots & lots of paper
• watercolor sets
• old magazines
• glue
• mirrors (30, for self portraits)

Many of us have old magazines and paper sitting around taking up space.
Please bring some item from this list to the November 2 LSC meeting. Let's
make sure they know in NOLA that we have not forgotten them. Monetary
donations will also be accepted.
