BEST Competition
STC is again sponsoring BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and
Technology) robotics competition for middle- and high-school students and
we need judges for the process notebook competition, on Oct 25, and for
game day, Oct 27. We also need two people to run the judging software for
scoring.
Each school has to write a project notebook about their robot design,
build, and test process. The notebook scores of all teams are used to
determine which 4 teams earn a chance for the single wildcard slot in the
playoff rounds. The notebook also counts for 30 points on the 75 point
total for the BEST award.
The notebook has to meet some very specific requirements, including:
- a research paper on how the current year's game theme is related to
current technological practices or scientific research.
- provide a description of the process the team used to design and
complete its robot
- 30 pages for the notebook (2-5 pages for research paper) and 20
additional pages for support material.
The students work really hard on these notebooks and they have gotten
better every year.
The Thursday night notebook judging is from 6 - 9 pm and dinner is
provided. You will also receive a softcopy of the notebook that you can
examine before meeting with all of the other judges.
The game day judging is from 8:30 am to noon and includes judging for the
BEST award and other specific awards. You will be interviewing and
observing the students as a team and individually. You will also evaluate
their table display, their spirit and sportsmanship and their t-shirt
design. There are other specific awards that need to be judged.
Won't you please consider helping and being a judge? The students really
do appreciate your feedback and try to follow it in the next year's
competition. You will make a difference in the lives of a lot of students.
Contact Georgina Cantoni if you are interested in participating.
