to Dallas. In Dallas I am the Creative Marketing Manager for Matrix
Telecom. Although I am new to the LSC, I look forward to the opportunity
to serve on the LSC Administrative Council.

Chris La Porte (Treasurer) —

After obtaining a BS in Journalism I spent five years in the Air Force as
a missile combat crew commander and additional duty information officer.
Upon leaving the Air Force I moved to Dallas and went to work in the
electrical supply business. I wrote business policies, procedures,
published and edited catalogs fliers, and legal documents. I also designed
forms and purchased printing. I completed the certificate program in
technical writing at Richland College. Since 2000 I have done contract
work in telecom software, mainframe software, and marketing
communications. Now I am full-time at Dresser Inc. working on their
Sarbanes-Oxley program. I am married and enjoy computers, hiking, fly
fishing, swimming, and reading. Besides STC, I am a member of the
International Association of Business Communicators, Trout Unlimited, and
the Association of Air Force Missileers.

Robert Crump (Parliamentarian) —

I grew up in Ponca City, Oklahoma, where I graduated from High School in
1980, and later joined the Army, where I served in the 82nd Airborne in
Ft. Bragg, NC, and in the 8th Infantry Division in Baumholder, Germany.
After leaving the Army, I earned a BA in English from the University of
Central Oklahoma in 1992. I started my career as a technical writer by
working for manufacturing companies such as MerCruiser in Stillwater,
Oklahoma. In 1994, I moved to Dallas, Texas to get into online
documentation. I have been active in the Society for Technical
Communication and have won awards for my work, and I look forward to
serving as Parliamentarian.

The Election Process

The election of officers takes place during the April 14 community
meeting. The election process is as follows:

Who Task

Each LSC member Receives a ballot at the time of registration

Each LSC member Completes the ballot and places it in the ballot
box prior to the start of the program

Nominating Committee Tabulates the ballots

Nominating Committee Presents the results to the President

Chapter President Announces the 2004-2005 officers to the chapter
members

Officers must be elected on the first ballot by a majority of members
voting, either in person or by written proxy. If no majority is obtained
for a particular office on the first ballot, or if there is a tie, a
second ballot is taken for that office to decide by plurality among the
two or more candidates who received the greatest number of votes on the
preceding ballot.

By-Laws Amendments

In addition to the election of candidates, the following two amendments to
the Community by-laws on the ballot, generally related to the Society
transformation initiative.

Article I: Name

Current:

The name of this organization is Society for Technical Communications,
Lone Star chapter. The Society’s legal name is the Society for Technical
Communication, Inc. The remainder of these Bylaws refers to the Lone Star
chapter as the chapter, and to the Society for Technical Communication as
the Society.

Proposed Revision:

The name of this organization is Society for Technical Communications,
Lone Star community. The Society’s legal name is the Society for Technical
Communication, Inc. The remainder of these Bylaws refers to the Lone Star
community as the community, and to the Society for Technical Communication
as the Society.

Article V: Memberships

Current:

Section 1: Qualifications

All members of the chapter must be members in good standing of the Society
for Technical Communication, who were assigned to the chapter by the
Society or who transferred into the chapter from another chapter. Article
II of the Society’s Bylaws describes the grades of membership and the
rights and privileges of those grades of membership.

By acceptance of the Society’s certificate of membership, each member
agrees to abide by its governing documents, work toward achievement of its
purposes, and act in accordance with its guidelines. Members who fail to
do so may have their membership suspended or revoked by the Society’s
Board of Directors.

Members avoid conflicts of interest in fulfillment of their professional
responsibilities and activities. If a member becomes aware of any
potential, possible, or actual conflict of interest between professional
responsibilities and STC activities, that member has a responsibility to
disclose all relevant information to the chapter President, who will
handle the reported conflict according to the powers and constraints of
the Society and the Administrative council.

the stated authorized LSC member, who must present the proxy during
registration.
• The person who is granted your proxy must present the signed proxy when
registering for the meeting.
• If you do not want to grant full proxy and instead authorize a vote for
a specific person and office, state that in the proxy. Such a proxy is
valid only on the first ballot.
• The proxy is valid only if the member granting the proxy signs it.

The Candidates

Each candidate has provided the following biographical information along
with
some thoughts and reasons for wanting to serve on the LSC Administrative
Council.

Louellen Coker (President) —

When I jumped into technical communication with both feet in 2000, the
first
things I did (even before enrolling in UNT's Master's Program) was join
STC,
knowing it would be an invaluable source of professional support. The
Society
and LSC didn't let me down. Since I've been a Lone Star Community member,
you've
supported me with scholarships; competition feedback that ultimately led
to a
job offer; and the knowledge necessary to start my own business and, more
importantly, to keep my clients coming back. Without LSC’s sustenance, I'm
not
sure I would have survived the transition to a "real" technical
communicator and
the difficulties of juggling work and school.

Over the last two years, I've served as your First and Second Vice
President and
on several committees. I've submitted articles occasionally to Technically
Write
and have presented at Fort Worth Satellite meetings, Regional Conferences,
and
two National Conferences. I've tried to give back to the Community as
the
community has given to me.

When Jim Chambless asked me about my vision and goals for this next year,
I
laughingly responded, "To survive!" After much thought, I'd like to amend
that
to "survive, evolve, and thrive." Over this next year, I will work to
provide
our members (that’s YOU) with the sustenance you need to survive the
demands of
our industry by continuing successful programs and providing new
opportunities
for members to recognize the innumerable rewards of our community. I will
work
with the Administrative Council to evolve along with the Society to
provide even
more member value. And finally, I invite the membership in general to join
in as
the Lone Star Community begins to THRIVE.

Specifically, we will closely analyze our workshops and monthly meetings
to
ensure they provide the type of sustenance you need for your careers and
provide
the value you expect through networking and education opportunities (with
a bit
of fun thrown in for good measure). As LSC gets ready to host the 2006
Region 5
Conference, we are viewing this opportunity as one more way to share with
other
communities how we evolve and thrive in our rapidly changing industry. We
need
YOU, your input, your presence, and your help to achieve these goals!
I'm
excited to see how we survive, evolve, and thrive during 2005-06 and
beyond.

Mel Haughton (First Vice President) —

After receiving several scholarships from STC while I was in college, I
decided that it was time to give something back. I learned a lot about our
community in the past two years, and I have served as Community Service
Chair
and Second VP. A native of São Paulo, Brazil, I originally came to the
U.S. as
an exchange student, and I went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in
Journalism/Spanish from the University of North Texas (UNT). I also earned
my
master’s in Technical Writing from UNT, and I started working as a
proposal
manager for SBC. Our community can offer great benefits and services for
our
membership, and I am eager to organize a different, fun program for next
year.
Please allow me to keep working for you; together, we can make our
community an
even greater one in the future. I hope I can continue to bring diversity
to our
community, and I look forward to serving you!

Brenda Hodson (Second Vice President) —

Serving as Lone Star Community Secretary has been a rewarding experience.
Aside from fulfilling the responsibilities of Secretary, I participated in
other
LSC activities, such as judging Competition entries, editing public
relations
materials, and participating in Chapter community service events. My
non-STC
volunteer experience includes counseling at Dallas’s Suicide and Crisis
Center
and the Cincinnati Crisis Intervention Center as a certified suicide and
crisis
counselor. I participated in Jane Goodall’s Chimpanzoo project, gathering
behavioral research data used to enrich the environment of chimpanzees and
other
primates worldwide. The upcoming year again holds many opportunities to
build on
my LSC, and as Second Vice President I will continue to support the LSC’s
goals
and initiatives that enable us to bring members the tools and information
necessary to remain marketable in our field.

Paul Holland (Secretary) —

A recent transplant from Cleveland, Ohio, who now resides in Dallas, I
have
been a technical communicator for over ten years. While at IOtech, a
manufacturer of PC-based data acquisition systems, I worked on the team
that
developed the company’s first website. I next worked for a medical imaging
company, responsible for marketing communications on the CT team. From
there I
joined a software consultancy, where I remained until moving to Dallas. In
Dallas I am the Creative Marketing Manager for Matrix Telecom. Although I
am new
to the LSC, I look forward to the opportunity to serve on the LSC
Administrative
Council.
