Senior Technical Writer

SUMMARY
Senior Technical Writers have the opportunity to work on a wide variety 
of projects within the Communications and Education Department. The 
department is responsible for all technical manuals for the company, and 
also writes or edits a variety of technical papers, marketing 
collateral, and training material. 

RESPONSIBILITIES
*Collaborate with programmers, engineers, and product management during 
the design phase to gain an understanding of the product
*Analyze requirements of project to determine types of publications 
needed
*Ensure accuracy and completeness of technical documentation
*Create, edit, manage, and maintain technical documentation for current 
and future applications
*Oversee documentation projects, and maintain and adhere to a schedule 
for completing these projects
*Lead in the creation of technical marketing collateral
*Write, edit, produce, and maintain online (internet/web-based) 
documentation 
*Assess the scope of new products or features and propose new books, 
tutorials, articles, and papers that would be helpful to customers, 
staff, and technical support team
*Research software tools and help to determine which tools the group 
will use. The design and creation of templates, standards, and styles is 
facilitated by the senior writer.
*Act as liaison between Communications and other inter-office 
departments
*The senior technical writer may provide guidance and direction to 
lower-level personnel.
*Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS
*Excellent oral and written communication skills
*An understanding of programming concepts, operating systems, and/or 
networking

EDUCATION/TRAINING
*Work requires a BA/BS in Technical Communications, Journalism, English, 
Computer Science, or related field.

EXPERIENCE 
*Work requires a minimum of six years writing experience, preferably in 
a technical field with an emphasis on technical documentation.  Prefer 
that four of the six years of experience be in information systems or 
information technology. 
*Knowledge of COBOL a definite plus.
*Experience in Adobe FrameMaker, Quadralay WebWorks or ePublisher, Adobe 
Acrobat, and Microsoft Word are helpful.
*Experience in graphic design and layout a plus. 
*Knowledge of HTML and XML desirable.
