perhaps you could operate a professional email system so that we who are
actually out there in the real world earning a living at technical
communication could get on with our jobs and not be pestered by this SHIT
As far as I am concerned you have as much credibility at this point as
those spammers selling penis enlargement drugs
Just get me off this list

A very eloquent and well constructed rejoinder, especially from one who
claims so little time to devote to such trifles. I give it an A.
As for being stuck with us and the lack of civility, I am reminded of one of
my favorite sayings about life in the academy: the debates here are so
bitter because the stakes are so low.

I wasn't going to respond to this, but isn't STC an organization to promote
better communication? This is the second nasty/sarcastic message I have
received today. Maybe, since you can write witty nasty sarcasm, you feel
it's acceptable.
I for one have no idea how I was placed on this particular list-serve.
Pardon my ignorance at forgetting that you must unsubscribe to be removed. I
do believe I had to do that once before about 2-3 years ago and I did just
that after the FIRST reminder. However as you can see, I am still getting
all the emails.
Jennifer Bracken pointed out to me that this is a very important issue you
are discussing and that the very survival of STC depends on it.
Well
my survival depends on my doing my job and overloading my already full (with
work) email box is not just a distraction, but an impediment.
My apologies for adding to the onslaught, but until the request to remove
kicks in, I'm stuck with you.
This is from the Academic community?? Not much civility that I see. Mr
Stein, you are a teacher? Wow. I give you about a 1.0

I propose we develop a session for the next international conference on how
to unsubscribe from an e-mail list without exposing your ignorance to the
entire listserv community. Based on many of the messages in this
discussion, I predict record attendance. Of course we may run into the next
logical problem: explaining to attendees who don't like our presentation
how to use the door when they leave.

I, too, am adjunct faculty. I teach at two universities (well, OK, two UC
campuses: Riverside main campus and San Diego Extension). I haven't asked
them to send me to the conference. UCR might (although I'm covered anyway,
so I won't ask), because I teach through the Engineering College, and
they're just so pleased with themselves for having a tech comm class that
they can hardly stand it. They'll get over it, I'm sure.
I'm fortunate enough to a) be speaking and b) have built going to the STC
conference into my job offer (one of the advantages of working for an
education company is that they believe in education).
I'm liking the discussion that's going on. There are some good ideas here,
and some excellent points. Now maybe we should turn one or more of them into
a proposal? It's easy to say "someone" should do "something", but STC, like
our colleges, has limited resources and has to choose where to spend them.
Without proposing a specific and concrete plan of action, we're not going to
get any further with this...

I have read all of the comments posted for the last three days and I
feel that one group is missing from the mix. That group is adjunct
faculty members. Are there any other members of the Academic SIG that
fall under this category?
I am a practioner in the industry but also teach a class in Usability
Testing in the department of Technical Communications at a local
4-year
college. I was brought in to teach the course because of my experience
in the field.
In answer to the question that was posed... I will not be able to
attend
the conference. There are no monies at the college to provide
professional development to adjunct faculty members, and I have been
unable to make a business case to my employer for my attendance at the
Regional or National STC conferences, much less be recognized by my
contribution to the profession and my company by teaching the class I
do.

[stc-ac] Conference rates for
12/02/2006 02:25 academics
PM
Colleagues,
I'm attaching Lloyd Tucker's note about conference rates for academic
members of STC. I'd like to start a discussion about these rates on
this
list. Lloyd Tucker is the new Director of Education on the STC
Office
Staff. The policy is
I guess my first question would be: How many of the academic
practitioners on this list think that they could take advantage of
this
rate opportunity?
Other questions: What is the value proposition here? Is it the
students or the professor?
The larger issue is how will academics participate in the
industry-oriented conference that is now planned as the new model.
According to the Knowledge-based Governance survey STC conducted in
November, 74% of respondents (n = 993) to the question, "In your
opinion, where should STC be focusing its efforts to build
relationships?" said "academic institutions." Do you think this
policy
represents a significant step in that direction?
Your thoughts?
