Salaries for New Prof/Tech Writers with Hard Science Minor?

I'm not sure if it makes a difference in marketability, but it sure
makes a difference when you're going in to talk to the technical folks.
At one company I used to work for, there were a couple of developers who
would only work with me when they needed documentation done, because I
"was the only one that could understand them." (I don't think that was
actually true, but that was the perception). When you start documenting
parallel processes and wireless networking protocols, that CS degree
sure comes in handy! Of course, the flip side is that you find yourself
doing all of the super-technical documentation, so if you're not
interested in that, a technical degree or minor may not be an advantage.

I can't give a dollar amount (money depends on who you work for), but I
would say that a minor in computer science, or any of the biology and
engineering majors is a big plus as a tech writer! Even a minor in
Graphic design will give a writer an edge. Any of these will add to
your marketability.
