Fwd: STC: New Dues Structure for 2008

Hi, Ann--I understand your good intentions in wanting us all to
contribute to the forum and not our listerve, but ... Fact is that STC's
forum is poorly designed and a pain to deal with. It requires some
effort to get there to read, much less contribute. Besides, forums work
differently (and often less spontaneously) than listserves. We have a
listserve for a reason: it's a convenient way for many of us to share
our thoughts. Maybe if/when STC creates a universal portal for members,
pushing discussions off to a forum will make sense. But that's a big
maybe, and, in the meantime, this is the communication channel that
we're choosing, so let's make the most of it! This has been, and
continues to be, an engaging and heartfelt discussion. I'm learning from
listening to it. If it moves to the forum, I wouldn't be, so I'd miss it
a lot!--Lu

Linda originally asked for comments on the STC Forum, in the thead
established for that purpose: http://stcforum.org/viewtopic.php?id=1046
I summarized this AC list thread, but can't summarize all the details
and Teresa's comment ought to be in the Forum thread. Teresa, would you
post in the Forum thread?

This dues structure looks like US and Canadian members are underwriting
the cost of memberships outside of North America.

It is my experience for other international organizations that I belong
too, that the cost of running international operations are higher than
delivering services domestically. Why are we being taxed so that STC can
deliver these groundbreaking services to offshore counterparts?

I'm all for providing access to STC services to anyone who wants them.
But, if the market price is $XXX, it should be the price for services
for any member, regardless of their physical location.

I have reconsidered my membership in other organizations who have
instituted similar pricing structures for their international members. I
do not think that that cost-shifting to your membership base is the best
practice for growing international membership.
