New Dues Structure for 2008

I have to agree with Dan Voss about the negative impact that raising
student fees will produce.
Certainly, I do think that professionals (in academe or not) can
afford an increase of $2/month (for the $25 a year increase) to belong to STC.
But my students cannot afford the $75. They can't even afford the
$25 a year, now, as far as they are concerned. They have to choose
between books and food, quite often. They can't afford a new tie or
a new top to interview in. Frankly, those students need as much
support as they can get, and the least that STC can do is offer them
a way "in" to a field that is difficult for them to break in to alone.
STC is critically wrong here, and the group as a whole can expect
student chapters to disappear. We tried to start one here, but the
dues were even prohibitive last year for those students.
