Fwd: STC: New Dues Structure for 2008

I totally support the forum, but understand Lu's point about access. It
also appears to me that these discussions could occur in one of many
venues, and it's difficult to consider where to carry the torch. In the
past I've posted from this list to the forum, summarizing the issues and
letting the main point be heard in that area, because I think the Board
reads it. Anybody else can do that if they want.

I'm not suggesting stopping the discussion on the list. I'm suggesting
posting to the Forum, so the Board and the staff will see the ideas. The
AC
Community could designate someone to do this--not Lou or me. We need to
hear
more voices. The Lone Writers posted to the Forum today to be heard by
Board
and Staff. Other members of this list indicated they'd like to post the
AC
Community's thoughts on the Forum.

Visiting is easy-- http://stcforum.org Contributing is easy
too--register
and type a post. If you have problems registering, it's due to the
servers
and help is available; write to Lou, public at quillio.com

We owe a big debt of gratitude to our volunteer server administrators
who
put up the Forum when the Board wanted it, and have maintained it for
two
years. We used the open source software our volunteers knew and STC
could
afford, of course. If you want a new forum or a different category, the
quickest way to get it is to write to ann at annlwiley.com There's now
Help,
too, on the STC Wiki--written entirely by volunteers:
http://stc-on.org/wiki/Forum_Help

As to the topic being discussed, nobody's income has kept up with the
increases in dues. Most members pay their own dues. Very few members can
afford the annual conference. Every time STC raises dues, we lose
members.
$15.00 a month is a lot of money if you're unemployed, underemployed, or
poorly paid. I've said this for years. We need more voices being heard
by
the Board and the staff.

Hi, Ann--I understand your good intentions in wanting us all to
contribute
to the forum and not our listerve, but ... Fact is that STC's forum is
poorly designed and a pain to deal with. It requires some effort to get
there to read, much less contribute. Besides, forums work differently
(and
often less spontaneously) than listserves. We have a listserve for a
reason:
it's a convenient way for many of us to share our thoughts. Maybe
if/when
STC creates a universal portal for members, pushing discussions off to a
forum will make sense. But that's a big maybe, and, in the meantime,
this is
the communication channel that we're choosing, so let's make the most of
it!
This has been, and continues to be, an engaging and heartfelt
discussion.
I'm learning from listening to it. If it moves to the forum, I wouldn't
be,
so I'd miss it a lot!--Lu

Linda originally asked for comments on the STC Forum, in the thead
established for that purpose: http://stcforum.org/viewtopic.php?id=1046
I summarized this AC list thread, but can't summarize all the details
and
Teresa's comment ought to be in the Forum thread. Teresa, would you post
in
the Forum thread?
