Dear STC-AC Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that the National Science Foundation has funded a three-day "Chautauqua" in which you may want to participate.
Teaching Communication Skills in the Software Engineering Curriculum:
A Forum for Professionals and Educators
Supported by NSF Award #0722231
June 9-11, 2008
Miami University
Oxford, Ohio USA
PURPOSE
The Chautauqua will explore ways of creating a new curriculum for software engineering students that better equips them with the communications skills they will need in their careers. At the Chautauqua, professionals and educators will articulate challenges and solutions, and they will build links for further work.
Whether you are in industry or higher education, you can make a special contribution to this project.
(In this context, "systems engineering" designates the general field that also goes by such names as computer science, computer engineering, systems analysis, and so on.)
PROGRAM
This Chautauqua will be a loosely structured, interdisciplinary forum. Following the historical precedent of the Chautauqua, participants will engage a wide range of activities, including reports, demonstrations, tutorials, and panel discussions.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER FROM MICROSOFT
Microsoft Corporation is generously sponsoring our keynote speaker, Ted Dworkin. Ted is a Principal Group Manager in the business group that builds and ships Microsoft's flagship Windows software and services products (Windows Vista and Windows Live). He is also a member of Microsoft's Content Publishing Leadership Team. He heads a team of engineers who span roles from program developer to content publisher.
An active and influential leader within Microsoft, Ted will articulately represent the issues of concern to industry and he will energetically participate in the Chautauqua's search for solutions.
EXPENSES FOR 30 PARTICIPANTS PAID BY NSF
The National Science Foundation will cover travel, food, lodging, and registration costs for 30 participants selected by the Chautauqua's steering committee (see below). For those not receiving support, there is a fee of $150 to cover food and registration costs (this fee will not cover lodging or travel).
LOCATION
The Chautauqua will take place on the beautiful campus of Miami University, which is especially attractive in June. Participants will stay at the university's splendid Marcum Conference Center and Inn (http://www.hdg.muohio.edu/marcum/)
APPLICATION TO PARTICIPATE
We are seeking faculty who are can contribute to an interdisciplinary discussion of curriculum-wide strategies for improving the communication skills of systems engineering students.
If you are interested, please see the full description of the Chautauqua at http://www.speaksoft.mtu.edu/Chautauqua2008.html.
