Hi,

Word-of-mouth is the most powerful method of increasing event
attendance. The PR committee sends email to the listserv, which provides
facts. It gives people something they can refer to for the details. But
your personal recommendation is an invitation, and it helps people
consider the meeting a good use of time. Consider movie listings - a
great reference, once someone recommends a movie.

This month's program will be especially exciting and dynamic. I look
forward to seeing you there. Now that you are invited -

**Please, take a moment in the next few days to talk to someone you know
as a tech writer, STC member or potential future member, and invite them
personally to the meeting.**

The message that will be posted to the blog and general listserv
follows.

Thanks,

Tamara

FOLLOW THE ARROWS: LESSONS FROM THE CIRCUS

Clowns, acrobats, jugglers, flyers: these are the performers who present
a wonderful show for you. Behind the scenes, though, are many other
people who are vital to the success of the show: roustabouts, prop
handlers, and office staff ensure a smooth operation. How does a circus
resemble a career in technical communication? Who are the performers and
who are the supporters? How can you, as a technical communicator, ensure
that your performance receives rave reviews? Mary Wise, a former circus
clown and current technical communicator, shares the lessons she learned
from her show-business career.

Mary R. Wise is a Senior Communications Manager at Fannie Mae, where she
designs and develops e-learning courses that help mortgage professionals
work effectively with Fannie Mae. She has over 20 years experience in
technical communication, including stints as word processor, technical
writer, instructional designer, and staff manager. Her STC service
includes positions as annual conference program manager, Region 2
Director-Sponsor, and Society President. Although she has a B.A. from
the University of Maryland, Mary feels her background as a circus clown
prepared her well for both her corporate and STC jobs.

The STC chapter meeting is on March 28, 2006. Meetings are free and open
to the public. The meeting starts with light refreshments and networking
at 6PM. A business meeting starts at 6:30 PM. The program starts at 7PM
and ends at 8PM. Meetings are held in the first floor auditorium of the
MCC Building, 3925 W. Braker. The MCC Building is at the southwest
corner of the intersection of Braker Lane and MoPac (Loop 1). More
information is available at www.stcaustin.org.
