In addition to the excellent program, you will have an extraordinary
opportunity if you join us at the February meeting on Tuesday, 2/28. --clm

When JoAnn Hackos was in town for the CTDUG meeting, she graciously awarded
a full paid fee for the CIDM Content Management Strategies conference on
April 3-5 at the Hyatt Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. I won this prize
and am registered for it. Unfortunately, other obligations now prevent me
from going. Therefore, I will raffle my conference seat at the STC meeting
next week. The conference fee is valued at ~$1300! Airfare and hotel are not
included.

All proceeds will benefit the Central Texas student community in two ways.

*	A portion of the raffle proceeds will be used to help defray the
costs of 2006 STC fees for as many as 10 student members in order to help
start a new Central Texas STC Student Community. (STC student membership is
$50 annually.)
*	A portion of the proceeds will go into STC Austin's Scholarship
Fund, which will be available to qualified undergraduate and graduate
students in the field of technical communication for the 2006-2007 school
year.

You do not have to be an STC member or STC Austin member to win the raffle.
Feel free to pass this on to your colleagues and to your students. STC
tuition relief is available only in conjunction with membership in the new
Central Texas STC Student Community (CTSSC). Students from Central Texas in
the Technical Communication programs at ACC, Texas State University, and
other schools as well as students in related programs and with TC related
career interests are invited to join this new community.

N.B. Please do not contact me or other Board members directly about the
raffle. If you cannot attend the meeting and want to enter the raffle, send
your name and contact info on a 3x5 card, along with cash, MO, or a check
made out to "STC Austin" in the amount of $25 with someone who will attend
the meeting. If you are present, entering the raffle will cost you only $20.
So you should just come on along. More information about scholarships will
be available later in the year and will be sent to local area schools and
faculty. For more information about CTSSC, see me before the meeting next
week.

STC Austin February Meeting Notice from Tamara Dwyer, STC Austin Public

Please join us at the Feb meeting, 2/28.
--------------------------------------------------

Building skills, generating items for your portfolio, making new
friends...what are your goals? The chapter leadership is looking for
candidates for next year's teams. If you come to the meeting with your goals
in mind, we can match them to roles in the chapter teams.

--------------------------------------------------

The guiding principle of technical communication is to help users find and
use the information they need. Sometimes, the same old book-and-chapter
format doesn't serve the users of a new system. The February Society for
Technical Communication meeting features Kathlyn Auten, presenting "Dazzling
Your Customers With Multifaceted Information Products". Kathlyn explains how
her team threw out the book and designed a product information Web site that
is structured to fit the design system it supports.

Kathlyn Auten is manager of ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit)
Product Information at Texas Instruments. This team has produced product
information strictly on the Web since 1996, improving timeliness and
efficiency and dramatically reducing costs by automating much of the Web
delivery and eliminating paper. Kathlyn is a senior member of the Lone Star
STC chapter and a past manager of the Lone Star publications competition.

The STC chapter meeting is on February 28, 2006. Meetings are free and open
to the public. The meeting starts with light refreshments and networking at
6PM. The program starts at 7PM and ends at 8PM. Meetings are held in the
first floor auditorium of the MCC Building, 3925 W. Braker. The MCC Building
is at the southwest corner of the intersection of Braker Lane and MoPac
(Loop 1). More information is available at www.stcaustin.org.
