The secret of technical writing success?

Dear Aunt Karen,

You've posed a question near and dear to my heart. In the interest of space,
here are but two of many recommendations I could make to your nephew:

1. Suggest that he look at WRITING FOR PRINT AND DIGITAL MEDIA by Michael
Ryan and James W. Tankard, Jr. <Disclaimer: My late husband> (New York:
McGraw-Hill, 2005). The book addresses not only the issue of how to become a science
writer (see esp. pp. 449-452) but also the various skills used by one. Your
nephew may gain an understanding of media convergence and an overview of both
research and theory.

2. Wherever he goes to college and whatever he selects as a major, he might
consider joining the student newspaper staff as an extracurricular activity to
bolster his knowledge of journalism and understanding of newswriting
techniques. He will pick up a "free" course that way.

Keep me posted on his progress in the "sorting out" process. He sounds like a
young man able to read his own pulse at an early age.

Peace,
Lanie Tankard
