Non-traditional online student at Kaplan Univeristy pursuing a Communications/Technical Writing degree is looking for a mentor

Hello STC-Austin.

I am a student at Kaplan University Online and pursuing a Bachelors in Communication/Technical Writing.  I live in San Antonio and just joined S.T.C. and the San Antonio Chapter.  I will be attending my first meeting with them on Feb. 12th.

My immediate goals are to learn more about the different titles and job positions of  technical writing, to find an entry level -- internship/externship in technical writing.

I have always had a love for writing.  In the past I have mainly wrote poetry and for school.  I have had one magazine article published.  I discovered that I had an aptitude for technical writing after taking a course in technical writing.  I started at Kaplan University pursuing a degree in Business Administration.  After taking Technical Writing, I knew that it was for me and switched to that degree plan.   Here I am in my second year, proofreading my partners work who is a UI Producer/Information Architect for USAA.  

I enjoy reading as much as writing so practicing proofreading and editing is good practice for me.

I appreciate any feedback on how to get started as a technical writer on  what are the predominate skill sets including software and any networking opportunities to get that first entry level position .
