Welcome back to STC-Austin-general, the mailing list for informal
communication between technical communicators in the Austin area! This
mailing list is provided by the Austin chapter of the Society For
Technical Communication (STC), but you don't have to be a member of STC or
the chapter to join the list. This list has moved to a new mailing list
system. The old system, Lyris, had quit working and its program was
unsupported, so the STC IT folks who host the list switched to a new
system using Mailman. You are already in the new list; you don't need to
sign up again.
As a user, the main differences you will see are:
To post to the list, you send your e-mail to a different address:
stc-austin-general at mailman.stc.org
You must use a password to change your mailing list options (such as
changing your password, unsubscribing, or changing options such as
receiving individual e-mails or a daily digest). Instructions for
changing your password are provided below.
You need to "white list" the new mail server (mailman.stc.org) in your
spam filter, to ensure that monthly password reminders and other notes
from the server can get through.
If you did not get a Welcome email for this list earlier today, follow
this procedure to change your password and set your options:
1. Go to http://mailman.stc.org/mailman/listinfo/stc-austin-general
2. Locate the "Stc-austin-general Subscribers" section near the bottom of
the page.
3. In the text box next to the "Unsubscribe or edit options" button, type
your e-mail address, then click the button.
4. In the section "Your Stc-austin-general Password", under "Forgotten
your password?", click "Email My Password to Me".
5. When you receive the e-mail with your password, follow the link in the
note to change your password and any other options.
Tip: If you subscribe to multiple STC Austin mailing lists (any
combination of stc-austin-admin, stc-austin-announce, stc-austin-general),
you can set the same password for all of them by checking the "Change
globally" option that's located below the "Change My Password" button.
You need to change your password for each e-mail address that was
subscribed to original list. For example, if you subscribed under both
your home and office e-mail addresses, you have two IDs (each e-mail
address is a separate ID with its own password) and need to change the
password for both of them. You'll get this note at each e-mail address
that's currently subscribed to the list.
Your digest and other preferences were copied from the old listserv
system, so they should be correct. You can check them or change any mail
options and your password at
http://mailman.stc.org/mailman/listinfo/stc-austin-general.
For documentation about the new mailing system, you can refer to the user
documentation at
http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman-member/index.html.
While we all get settled using the new mailing list, please:
Be sensitive about posting a test message. If everyone tests, we'll get a
flood of e-mail. Who needs that? I've tested it and it works for 2
e-mail addresses (both mine). And if you got this note, you're on the
list and the list worked. But if you're not comfortable with that and
want to try it yourself, I won't be offended, although I can't speak for
the rest of the list.
Be understanding about the test messages as people get used to the new
mail server.
If you have any questions or problems, let me know.
