From Pam_Harris at hill-rom.com Thu Jan 12 09:17:29 2006 From: Pam_Harris at hill-rom.com (Pam_Harris at hill-rom.com) Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 11:17:29 -0500 Subject: Upcoming NCFUN meeting - January 24th @Hill-Rom Message-ID: NC-FUN SIG Events Here are details on the next NC-FUN meeting, followed by an archive of our past events. Next Meeting: WebWorks Automap Date: Tuesday, January 24, 2006 Time: 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (networking until from 3:30 to 4, presentation until 5:30) Topic: Simon Bate of Symantec will share his experience with Quadralay's WebWorks AutoMap. AutoMap promises to make automated production of documentation a breeze. In many ways, the product delivers on the promise. Symantec is currently producing 14,000 pages a night in nearly 100 documents (PDF, CHM, and WebWorks Help). AutoMap isn't even breaking a sweat. However there are many things that are not described in Quadralay's marketing materials and product documentation that you need to find out before setting up a successful implementation. In the presentation, Simon will: 1) give an overview of Symantec's production needs, 2) describe the overall workings of AutoMap, and 3) describe how he got AutoMap to do what he needed. One hour long and completely worth watching! It starts out with a few minutes of the usual blah-blah about XML in general, but stick with it, because it gets really good. One of the advantages of moving to structured FrameMaker and an XML workflow is that you can use the tools of your choice. This webinar shows just one example of what that means. Disclaimer: I am not advocating XMetal nor am I in any way connected with that product. See the note below my signature for details. -Terry Smith ===== Hi Terry, As promised, the recording for the December 1st Webinar "FrameMaker(r) & XMetaL(r): Combining the Best of Both Worlds" is now available. Please go to https://blastradiusevents.webex.com to view this and other archived XMetaL Webinars. Please feel free to pass along to your colleagues. Also, you might be interested in a comparison sheet between Adobe(r) FrameMaker(r) and XMetaL(r) we created to help you further understand the two programs, and how it can work for you. Please see attached "Combining Blast Radius XMetaL(r) and Adobe FrameMaker(r) into a DITA-powered XML Authoring & Delivery Solution" As for the Questions from the Webinar, we're still working on that and will have answers compiled for them soon. We'll get that to you as soon as that's available. Thanks again for your participation and we look forward to seeing you online again soon. Shlomo Perets has released another add-on to TimeSavers (which lets you use markers in FrameMaker to automate all kinds of cool PDF actions). Here's the announcement he posted on the framers mailing list, in case you missed it there: New! 3D Assistant (TimeSavers add-on) v1.0 enables you to embed U3D files and define related views, links, bookmarks & JavaScript (custom menus, tools, and animations) through hypertext markers or referenced files, so that interactive 3D models, together with their specified features, are automatically present in the PDF file upon distilling. A sample PDF with an interactive 3D model, authored in FrameMaker (no additional work done in Acrobat) is available at http://www.microtype.com/showcase/3DAsst/dice-3d.pdf (156K; Acrobat Professional/Reader 7 required). Price of a single license is $100. I had heard that the XMetaL webinar was really awesome, but I had not been able to attend. I'm looking forward to watching it now. Awesome! Your comment -- "you can use the tools of your choice" -- is so on the mark! With XML (and DITA), companies have the freedom to give users the tools they want, rather than worrying about enforcing use of one tool. Now the Framers can use Frame, and the engineers can use XMetaL, and others can use what they want, and nobody has to worry about it. How cool is that?! And to think a mere decade ago people used to be unable to exchange files if they were different types. (Unfortunately, some companies still have those issues. :-) Take care, Kay ----- Original Message ----- From: Terry Smith ntsmi1 at yahoo.com To: stc_ncfun stc_ncfun at lists.stc.org Sent: 1/19/06 12:38 PM Subject: [stc_ncfun] Frame and XMetaL Webinar recording now available > For those of you who missed the FrameMaker and XMetal (with a DITA focus) > webinar last month, it is available on the web now.
