Message-ID: Hi all- As a newly joined member of this list, I'd like to just briefly introduce myself. My name is Yoel Strimling and I'm the editor in the Comverse Technical Communication Group (TCG) in Tel Aviv, Israel. We have about 13 writers here, and we write all sorts of project and product documentation. I am the owner and designer of the Style Guide, which is used across the company (not just by the writers in the TCG). Aside from my job editing documentation, I also am in charge of training writers how to writer better, with the goal of improving the overall quality of our output (which is why I'm really excited to be a part of this SIG!) Message-ID: (Cross-posted from the stcforum.org list at Ann Wiley's suggestion): Hi all! About a year ago, I received a copy of an excellent book from the IBM Press called Developing Quality Technical Information (DQTI). This book breaks technical communication down into nine distinct quality characteristics, and has been an absolute treasure trove of information for me and the writers who work here. My goal is to build an intensive training workshop for the writers based on it. At the STC Convention in May of this year, Michelle Corbin, Senior Technical Editor & Information Architect for the IBM Software Group (and our fearless list manager!), presented a lecture on what she calls the Editing for Quality (EFQ) process, which is based on the DQTI book. As I was unfortunately unable to attend the conference, I contacted her to find out how to go about getting more information on the process. I was especially interested in finding out how to build a training program for writers based on DQTI/EFQ, if anyone had tried to do this, and if there were any resources out there in the wide world I could turn to for help in this task. Michelle was quite helpful and responded to me by saying that she is writing a journal article that details the EFQ process to be published in the STC Technical Communication journal in November of this year. She also told me that IBM had created various education modules to help teach their writers about each of the nine quality characteristics, complete with exercises or quizzes. Unfortunately, these are proprietary. My question to the TE SIG as a whole is this: Do any of you use the DQTI in your work? Do you implement it in your writing/editing processes? Have you built any training programs based on it? Any feedback I can get on this would be much appreciated! I worked as a Technical Editor for several years before moving to my job as Quality Lead. I work for a Defense Contractor in support of the Marine Corps at Quantico, VA. Most of our work involves documentation done for Marine Corps Systems Command. My job involves ensuring that these documents are well written, are technically and grammatically correct, and adhere to Government standards. Part of my job also involves the improvement of our quality process. I hope to acquire general knowledge of quality processes, how others operate, and ideas for improvement of our quality processes.
