I appreciate everyone's input. This will be very helpful.
To expand on this theme, are there also resources for PDF forms? I
checked out Adobe Acrobat and LiveCycle Designer, but would like to find
information that provides greater depth. For example, is there any
benefit to adding the length of a form field or it's format or type?

You have received some good book suggestions. Mike Paciello's book is
great background, but also practical. I have hand-written some code
plucked out of that book because all the accessible info I was looking
for was in one place - with examples, too.
