On the UPA's User Experience magazine, we also dealt with this a few years ago. We had some of the same need for fuzzy dates (with a volunteer organisation, there's some probability of getting the issue to the production company slightly late, which can throw off reserved press times, etc., etc.), and we had been insensitive for a few issues before some of our Global South-based editorial board members pointed it out. UX magazine now numbers the issues with year, volume number, and issue number. Which means we all, worldwide, are likely to be equally unsure of the exact publication date when we come across an issue later, except that it's roughly aligned with calendar quarters. This doesn't seem to be too much of a problem, since they arrive in members' mail boxes (of whatever design) on a particular date, whenever it is.

Caroline, when's Michaelmas? I've always wondered.
