Browse Navigation and Search Combo

That would definitely describe some return users. But speaking from my
own experience, others would be more likely to remember the navigation
rather than a keyword search, particularly if the search required
multiple keywords or odd words one wouldn't easily remember.

I'm thinking of one site I use that has well-constructed, intuitive
navigation, as well as a pretty decent search function. Without doing so
on purpose, I've memorized the navigation paths to the items I use the
most. There is so much content on this particular site that I'd rather
navigate than fuss with searching for most things.

I suspect in the real world it's a mix, dependent on a lot of factors,
even for return users.

How's that for a conclusive answer? :)

The combination works well but what no one seems to be taking into
account is the return visitor.

Once the visitor knows where the content they want is, and what search
term will work to locate it swiftly, they are likely to use search to go
directly to it rather than browse to it, especially if working through
the menu system takes more clicks.
